Handmade candle cost: wax, wick and labour included

Candle costs come from buying in kilograms and using grams. Here's how to cost one candle properly.

Example: one 180 g container candle

All prices below are example figures. Use your own supplier prices.

  • Wax: 180 g at £8.00/kg = £1.44
  • Fragrance oil: 18 g at £30.00/kg = £0.54
  • Wick: £0.12
  • Jar: £1.10
  • Label: £0.15

Materials = £3.35

  • Labour: 10 minutes at £15/hour = £2.50
  • Packaging: £0.60
  • Overheads: £0.40

Total cost = £3.35 + £2.50 + £0.60 + £0.40 = £6.85

From cost to price

With an example selling fee of 10%:

Break-even = £6.85 ÷ 0.90 = £7.61

For a 30% profit margin after fees:

Target price = £6.85 ÷ (1 − 0.10 − 0.30) = £6.85 ÷ 0.60 = £11.42

Check: £11.42 − 10% fee (£1.14) − £6.85 cost = £3.43 profit, which is 30% of £11.42.

CraftMargin converts kilograms to grams for you, so you can enter wax the way you buy it.
